Bend doctor finishes 50-mile race following January car crash, brain trauma

BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) -- Dr. Will Speed, a Bend family doctor and Oregon Adaptive Sports volunteer who sustained severe brain trauma after being hit by a car in January, has completed a more than 50-mile bike race in Bend.

The collision occurred on Powers Road when a driver allegedly ran a red light and struck Speed at a high rate of speed while Speed was cycling. Following the crash, Speed was hospitalized in an intensive care unit with severe brain trauma.

Speed had registered for the race prior to the collision and intended to follow through with the event. He shared the update this week on his GoFundMe page, announcing to supporters that he had finished the course in Bend.

To assist with his recovery, Speed's family established a GoFundMe fundraiser following the collision. The online fundraiser has raised $85,000 to date.

Speed posted on Go-Fund-Me, in part, "...almost seven hours of mountain biking over 50+miles all around our beautiful home of bend. With a dusting of snow up on broken top and changing Aspen leaves along Tumalo Creek and my amazing wife and daughter waiting at the finish line, it was a day I'll never forget. This brings me to the update... I'm recovered and settled into my new normal."
