Attempted carjacking of UPS truck leads to Bend man’s arrest
Earlier traffic stop led to suspect's identity, arrest at retirement community
BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) -- A 22-year-old Bend man was arrested Friday on charges he tried to carjack a UPS truck at gunpoint earlier in the day at a southeast Bend business park.
Shortly after 11 a.m., police were sent to the Glenwood Business Park on Southeast Glenwood Drive on an attempted robbery/carjacking, Lt. Robert Jones said.
The alleged victim, a 30-year-old Bend man who works for UPS as a delivery driver, said an unknown man armed with a handgun attempted to carjack his UPS truck.
Officers began searching for the suspect, later identified as Kyle Lamont Cofer Jr., who the alleged victim described as wearing all-brown clothing, a brown hat, aviator sunglasses and holding a clipboard.
The driver said he originally thought Cofer was another UPS driver, based on his clothes, Jones said.
Police used a drone in their unsuccessful search for the suspect.
Witnesses in the area reported seeing a gold car speeding away from the area, described as having a black primer driver's door and a light bar, Jones said. Police sent out a countywide all-points bulletin to law enforcement agencies with a description of the car.
Soon, a Deschutes County sheriff's deputy reported recently making a traffic stop on a car matching that description, which helped investigators determined Cofer Jr.'s identity.
The suspect's car, a gold Toyota Camry with a black driver's door, was located at Aspen Ridge Retirement Community, where Cofer Jr. works as a dishwasher, Jones said.
Officers located the clothing, sunglasses, clipboard and an Airsoft handgun.
Cofer Jr. was taken to the county jail and booked late Friday on charges of first-degree robbery, first-degree menacing and two counts of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle. His bail totaled $145,000.
