Utah girl, 13, killed by falling tree at Detroit Lake
DETROIT, Ore. (KTVZ) – A 13-year-old girl from Utah was killed Sunday afternoon when the top of a large tree fell at Detroit Lake, hitting two tethered pontoon boats near the shoreline, Marion County sheriff’s deputies said.
Sheriff’s Marine Patrol deputies were dispatched around 3:40 p.m. to a boating accident in the Box Canyon area of Detroit Lake. The caller reported two ponton-style boats were tethered together near the shoreline when the top of a large tree fell, hitting both boats.
The caller said at least one person was severely injured and was taken by boat to Mongold State Park for help, deputies said.
Deputies and medics arrived a short time later at the boat ramp, where CPR was being administered to the victim. Life Flight was called in, but the girl did not survive and died at the scene, deputies said. No other injuries were reported.
The girl was at the lake with her family when the accident occurred. No other information about the victim was immediately released.
The sheriff’s office was assisted by the Detroit-Idanha Fire District, the Marion County district attorney and medical examiner’s offices, Lyons Ambulance, Life Flight, the U.S. Forest Service and Oregon State Parks and Recreation.
