REDMOND, Ore. (KTVZ) – A Redmond man was killed late Saturday night when his car left a southwest Redmond intersection at a 90-degree turn and struck a large tree, police said Sunday.

Police and firefighters responded just before midnight to the reported crash at Southwest 31st Street and Xero Avenue, Lt. Curtis Chambers said.

A nearby resident heard the crash and called Deschutes County 911 dispatchers. Chambers said.

Officers and medics arrived to learn the driver, identified as Gadiel Diaz, 25, did not survive the crash.

Chambers said a preliminary investigation found that Diaz was driving south on 31st Street and failed to negotiate the 90-degree turn onto Xero Avenue. His 1997 Honda Civic left the road and collided with a large tree on the driver’s side door.

Speed appears to be a contributing factor in the crash, the lieutenant said, adding that a determination of alcohol and/or drug impairment is pending toxicology results.

Redmond police were assisted at the crash scene by Redmond Public Works and the Central Oregon Public Safety Chaplaincy.
