La Pine man, missing for a day, found in good shape after a 16-mile walk

La PINE, Ore. (KTVZ) – A two-county search for a 22-year-old La Pine man missing from his home for over a day ended in success Thursday as a northern Klamath County resident found him in good shape after a 16-mile walk.

Kyle Shook was found about 10 a.m. "in good health," Lt. Bryan Husband, Deschutes County Sheriff's Office Search and Rescue coordinator told NewsChannel 21.

"He's being reunited with his family now," Husband said.

Deschutes and Klamath county SAR volunteers had been searching for Shook, who had last been seen on foot in the area of his home off Federal Road around 7 a.m. Wednesday.

Deputies said Kyle Shook is autistic, about 5-foot-9 and 154 pounds. He was thought to be wearing light brown, insulated Carhartt coveralls and black-rimmed glasses.

Husband later said Shook had walked about 16 miles to the south before he was found east of Beal Road, where it crosses the railroad tracks.

As it turned out, Shook was not, as earlier believed, wearing insulated Carhartt coveralls. Instead, he was found wearing blue jeans, sweatshirt and a jacket, with no hat -- and yet was not hypothermic and did not need medical attention.

A number of residents in the area received a Deschutes Alert System phone call and were checking their outbuildings and property for any sign of Shook.

After that, a resident spotted Shook walking across their property and called it in, Husband said. A Deschutes County Sheriff's Office special services deputy responded and found him walking through the trees.

Sgt. Jayson Janes said there was a sighting off state Highway 31 in northern Klamath County around 5 p.m. Wednesday. Deschutes and Klamath counties’ search-and-rescue units searched the area for several hours, but did not find him.
