Bend man running across Bend Parkway struck, killed by semi-truck

Crash investigation closes 3 lanes; SB traffic detoured onto Revere Avenue

BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) – A 42-year-old Bend man trying to run across the Bend Parkway was struck and fatally injured Saturday night by a semi-truck whose driver hit the brakes and swerved to try to avoid the collision, police said early Sunday.

Several callers to Deschutes County 911 reported the crash at 7:13 p.m. in the southbound lanes of the parkway, just south of the Hawthorne Avenue exit, Bend police Sgt. Tommy Russell said.

Officers arrived and rendered medical aid to the unconscious pedestrian, later identified as Marlow White, Russell said. Bend Fire & Rescue paramedics soon arrived and took White to St. Charles, where he died during treatment.

The semi-truck driver, a 56-year-old man from Alaska, stayed on scene and cooperated with the investigation. Russell said there was no indication alcohol or other substances were a factor in the collision.

According to several witnesses, White was seen trying to run from the west to the east side of the highway.

They said the truck driver saw the running man and applied his brakes, also turning into the adjacent southbound lane to try to avoid the collision, Russell said.

White was not crossing in a crosswalk or a pedestrian crossing area when the crash occurred, Russell said.

ODOT said the crash investigation resulted in the closure of both southbound lanes and one northbound lane. The agency said southbound traffic was being detoured off the parkway at the Revere Avenue exit.

Police reported the parkway reopened by about midnight.

The Bend Police Department was assisted with traffic control and road closures by the Oregon Department of Transportation Incident Response Team and the Bend Public Works Division. The investigation was assisted by the Deschutes County District Attorney's Office and the county Medical Examiner's Office.
