‘Oregon Loves Its Pets’ license plate to help spay-neuter programs
EUGENE, Ore. (KTVZ) -- A Eugene-based spay and neuter program is looking to raise funds with a special license plate that will attract attention from pet-lovers across the state while helping tackle pet overpopulation.
Each year in the US, approximately 1.5 million pets are euthanized in shelters — and while that is an incredibly disturbing number, just eight years ago, that figure was over 7 million annually. This huge reduction in the number of US pets euthanized is due in no small part to aggressive spay/neuter educational campaigns and low-cost S/N clinics opening across the country in the last decade.
The Eugene-based Willamette Animal Guild's high-quality, high-volume, low-cost S/N clinic opened in 2008 and will complete its 60,000th surgery in early 2020. This figure conservatively represents 300,000 fewer unwanted pets suffering on the streets or taxing shelter/rescue organizations.
Revenue generated by sales of the “Oregon Loves Its Pets” S/N plate will benefit WAG and its “Spay It Forward” program, which provides subsidies to further defray the cost of S/N for animals from low-income situations. Plate vouchers are just $40!
The plates will cost a $40 surcharge for new license plates and at each renewal, and would go into production once 3,000 vouchers are sold.
If WAG’s S/N plates continue to sell beyond their initial voucher period, as described in their FAQ/voucher link page, the organization will use a portion of its plate revenue to establish a “Spay It Forward Oregon” fund. These monies will then be used to make grants available to other Oregon organizations supporting low-cost S/N services, benefitting dogs and cats all across our beautiful state!
WAG’s S/N plates are available for preorder now through the DMV-mandated voucher sale process. Read their FAQ for detailed information on how the voucher process works and how you can get yours today!
