Two Bend Men Hurt in S. Century Drive Crash
Two Bend men were taken to the hospital, one by helicopter Monday after their SUV left South Century Drive, slid down the shoulder, hit a campground entrance and flipped onto its top, Deschutes County sheriff?s deputies said.
They were identified Tuesday as the driver, Adam Womack, 26, and passenger Steven Kaylor, 54. Womack was in fair condition Tuesday at St. Charles Medical Center-Bend, while Kaylor was treated and released, a spokeswoman said.
Sgt. Dan Bilyeu said Tuesday that “alcohol may have been a factor in this crash, which is still under investigation.”
Deputies responded just before 3:30 p.m. to the reported rollover crash on South Century at the entrance to Fall River Campground, said sheriff?s Lt. Deron McMaster.
McMaster said the 2000 Ford Escape was heading east at the time of the crash when Womack lost control of the SUV ?for unknown reasons.?
The Escape left the road and slid sideways down the road shoulder for about 100 yards, to the intersection with the Fall River Campground, where it hit the west shoulder and rolled onto its top in a ditch, McMaster said.
Kaylor was able to climb out of the upside-down SUV, but the driver was pinned inside for more than 45 minutes, he said.
Fire personnel used extrication tools to free Womack from the wreckage, and he was flown by AirLink helicopter to St. Charles Medical Center-Bend. Kaylor was taken there by ambulance.
Others involved at the scene included La Pine and Sunriver firefighters and U.S. Forest Service law enforcement and a Forest Service fire crew, the lieutenant said.
Bilyeu said the Escape was a total loss.
