Deschutes’ Red Chair again named ‘World’s Best Beer’

Deschutes Brewery has grown pretty accustomed to winning beer competitions around the world — but to have its Red Chair NWPA named “World’s Best Beer” on Friday — its second such honor in three years — was a lofty accomplishment indeed.

“We are pretty blown away” by the award, the brewery said on its Facebook page after the news came, also noting that The Abyss was recognized as the “world’s best stout/porter.”

The award is the second time in three years Red Chair has been given the honor, the last time was in 2010. The brew is also the only beer to win the honor for the company.

“To win it once is a huge accomplishment,” said Jason Randles, digital marketing manager for Deschutes Brewery. “But for it to win two out of three years is remarkable.”

As for Red Chair, here’s the description given by the judges of the awards, organized by Paragraph Publishing Ltd. in Great Britain: “Big nose, full of complex floral hops, citrus and berry notes. Juicy malts and hop resins build in the mouth, playing nicely with each other with a hint of orange zest throughout. Good carbonation. Well balanced and harmonious, all notes stick around from beginning to the lovely, long, bitter end.”

Paragraph Publishing Ltd. in Great Britain organizes the World Beer Awards, which must be generally available and for sale in bottles or cans.

The blind judging begins with regional heats held in Asia, Europe and the Americas. Style winners from all regions are then tasted against each other to select the World’s Best Style. From these world winners the judges pick the World’s Best categories, from which the World’s Best Beer is selected.
