Fire burns La Pine shop; house saved

La Pine firefighters extinguished a shop fire that was spreading to an adjacent home and RV late Sunday night, officials said.

The La Pine Rural Fire Protection District was dispatched around 11 p.m. to a report of a fully involved fire in an unoccupied shop at 15645 Woodgreen Court, with a home only about 10 feet away, said fire Capt. Fred Franklin.

As fire crews rushed to the scene, several callers told Deschutes County dispatchers the house was starting to catch fire, Franklin said.

The first unit arrived to find a 1,600-square-foot metal shop totally ablaze and flames spreading to the home on the east side, as well as an RV to the north that was about one-fourth involved in the fire, the captain said.

Crews doused the flames on both the home and RV as they extinguished the fire, which extensively damaged the shop, Franklin said.

The RV parked near the shop sustained heavy fire and smoke damage, Franklin said. As for the home, its siding was scorched and a window was broken. Some exterior wiring and a meter melted and was replaced by Midstate Electric before fire units cleared the scene, he said.

The cause of the fire was under investigation, Franklin said, adding that no injuries occurred. La Pine fire officials have a policy to not conduct damage/loss estimates.

More than a dozen firefighters were called to the scene, as were sheriff’s deputies.
