Bend marks Building Safety Month with events
Throughout May, the city of Bend will be celebrating Building Safety Month 2013. This year’s theme is “Code Officials Keep You Safe.” Each week, City Hall will offer a themed display:
May 6 – 12: Fire Safety & Awareness – Protecting our homes and workplaces with essential safety precaution measures.
May 13 – 19: Disaster Safety & Mitigation – Raising awareness about how to prepare for a natural disaster and take action when one strikes.
May 20 – 26: Backyard & Pool Safety – Creating a safer environment for families to enjoy activities outside the home.
May 27 – 31: Energy & Green Building – Spotlighting the latest advancements in sustainable design and building.
City Hall displays will include handouts for children, as well as additional information. The Bend Fire Department will also have a controlled burn demonstration on Thursday, May 9 at 10am, at the North Fire Station’s Training Center, located at 63377 Jamison Street. The demonstration will include a demonstrated structure fire and the effects of fire sprinkler systems.
Building Safety Month is presented by the International Code Council (ICC), a member-focused association dedicated to helping the building safety community and construction industry provide safe and sustainable construction through the development of codes and standards used in the design , build and compliance process. Whether a Building Official, Inspector, Plan Reviewer, or Fire Marshal, their mission is the same: to prevent harm by ensuring compliance with building safety codes before a disaster occurs. First Preventers play a major role in saving lives, protecting property, and reducing recovery costs often borne by the public.
