Bend PD: Man pulled knife, approached officer

A Bend police officer on downtown patrol Tuesday was approached by a 24-year-old man who was “acting strangely” and called in backup when the man produced a knife and advanced toward him, officers said. The man ran but was quickly apprehended.

Shortly after 2 p.m., the officer assigned to work the downtown area was approached by a man identified as Tyler Randolph Cox of the Bend area in the area of 1025 NW Bond Street, said Lt. Kurt Koester.

“Cox was acting strangely and would not respond to the officer,” Koester wrote in a news release. “Cox produced a knife and advanced toward the officer.”

The unidentified officer “remained calm, used good tactics, and requested assistance from other officers,” the lieutenant added.

As other officers began to arrive, Cox dropped the knife and fled on foot, but was apprehended a few blocks away.

Cox was taken to St. Charles Bend for evaluation, Koester said. He faces charges of first-degree attempted assault, unlawful use of a weapon, menacing, second-degree disorderly conduct and recklessly endangering.
