Cyclist hits pickup, injured in SW Bend

KTVZ

A 20-year-old Bend cyclist was hospitalized in fair condition Friday after colliding with the rear of a pickup truck parked along Brookswood Boulevard in southwest Bend, authorities said

Deschutes County sheriff’s deputies were dispatched around 4:35 p.m. to the reported accident on Brookswood near Lone Cow Drive involving a Toyota pickup truck and a cyclist, said Sgt. Joe DeLuca. Bend Fire paramedics also were called to the scene.

An initial investigation found that Charles Morris, 64, of Bend, was driving north on Brookswood when he pulled his silver 2007 Toyota Tacoma pickup off to the side of the road to adjust his GPS device. DeLuca said he had pulled off over the fog line and came to a full stop.

About two minutes later, Jake McDonald was riding his Scott HXN Carbon Tri Bike northbound and struck the rear of the pickup truck, DeLuca said. McDonald was wearing a helmet and going about 30 mph, he added.

McDonald was taken by ambulance to St. Charles Bend with non-life-threatening injuries, DeLuca said. A hospital nursing supervisor said he was in fair condition late Friday night.

The investigation of the crash is continuing, DeLuca said.
