Miller sworn in as Deschutes County judge
W. Randy Miller was sworn in as Circuit Court Judge in a ceremony held Thursday at the Deschutes County Justice Building. Presiding Judge Alta J. Brady presided over the ceremony and Judge Wells B. Ashby administered the Oath of Office.
Judge Miller takes the position previously held by Circuit Court Judge Barbara Haslinger, who retired from the bench on June 30 of this year following a 23-year judicial career in Deschutes County.
Judge Miller was appointed to the position to serve the remainder of Judge Haslinger’s term by Governor Kitzhaber after being elected in the May primary for a six-year term beginning January 1, 2015.
In his remarks, Judge Miller related the significance to him of Honor, Courage, Commitment, the core values which were instilled in him during his service in the United States Marine Corps.
He stated: “I’ve witnessed our judges here in Deschutes County, and elsewhere in our state, exemplify these same principles in their behavior, rulings and genuine care for the lives they effect and the people they serve. And so, it is my intention to apply these high standards in the performance of my new duty as Deschutes County Circuit Court Judge.”
A veteran of the United State Marine Corps, Judge Miller graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in business management from Linfield College. He received his law degree from Willamette University College of Law.
Judge Miller began private practice as a litigator for Schwabe, Williamson & Wyatt, transferring to its Bend office in 2006. He later opened a solo practice focusing on civil litigation representing businesses and individuals in commercial, construction, and real estate matters before state and federal courts.
Judge Miller’s prior experience includes serving as a police officer in Sunriver, serving on the board for Crystal Peaks Youth Ranch, and volunteering with Special Olympics.
