Bend apartment worker confronted by resident with knife

A contractor doing fire extinguisher maintenance outside a northeast Bend apartment was confronted by a knife-swinging resident on Wednesday morning, causing no injuries but leading to an hour-long standoff and evacuation of neighbors until the man was taken into custody, police said.

The incident began just before 8 a.m. at the Summit Park Apartments at 2017 Northeast Full Moon Drive, said police Lt. Clint Burleigh.

The fire extinguisher maintenance worker, contracted by the apartment management company, was working outside the front door of Michael Fuller’s apartment, on a common porch for Fuller and his neighbor, Burleigh said.

The man said he was finishing the work when Fuller, 41, came out of his apartment and immediately began swinging a knife in his direction. The man said he was able to evade Fuller’s movements and retreated down a staircase into the parking area, then called police.

Officers established a safe area around the apartment, which included evacuating other residents in the same building, Burleigh said.

A police negotiator was in contact with Fuller for an hour and was able to get him to come out of the apartment. He was taken into custody without incident and brought to St. Charles Bend for evaluation, which Burleigh said is common in such situations.

Possible criminal charges of menacing with a knife could be forthcoming, based on the outcome of the evaluation, Burleigh said. The case is being forwarded to the Deschutes County District Attorney’s Office for review.
