Canadian cyclist hurt in crash, rescued west of Bend

A Canadian woman who crashed her bike on a trail west of Bend late Saturday afternoon was injured and unable to walk out, triggering a rescue effort, Deschutes County sheriff’s deputies said.

Dispatchers at 911 got a call at 4:23 p.m. from a rider in the Phil’s Trailhead area, reporting that Catherine Laurendeau of Ottawa had crashed her bike on Kent’s Trail, said Deputy Russell Stanage, assistant Search and Rescue coordinator.

A patrol deputy and a U.S. Forest Service law enforcement officer were nearby and able to reach the patient on foot, Stanage said. They confirmed she was 1 miles from the Kent’s Trailhead and unable to walk out.

Two SAR volunteers and a deputy responded with two ATVs and helped Bend Fire medics bring Laurendeau back to the trailhead, where she was placed in an ambulance and taken to St. Charles Bend with non-life-threatening injuries, Stanage said.

Meanwhile, two other patrol deputies brought Laurendeau’s family to the hospital from the Sunriver area, where they were camping, he said.
