DA: No charges against man who held Redmond suspect at gunpoint
Deschutes County District Attorney John Hummel announced Thursday he won’t file criminal charges against a Springfield man who rescued two people from a Redmond DUII crash in mid-August, then chased and held at gunpoint the car’s fleeing driver.
Hummel also revealed the name of that citizen, saying that on Aug. 15, Joshua Dornon of Springfield came upon a single car roll-over crash in Redmond and extricated both occupants of the car.
The driver of the car then fled the scene on foot. Dornon ran to his car to retrieve a gun and chased the driver, later identified as Brandon Danley, eventually finding him hiding in an alley. Dornon held the driver at gunpoint until police arrived and arrested him on DUII and other charges.
“The general rule in Oregon is that people cannot point guns at other people,” Hummel said. ” Exceptions exist for law enforcement officers and for people who are acting in justifiable self-defense.
“Mr. Dornon’s actions on August 15 th were not justified under Oregon law,” the DA said. “However, not every technical violation of the law needs to be prosecuted. After reviewing the details of this case, talking with Mr. Dornon, and taking into account he had just rescued two people from a crashed car, I determined that declining to file criminal charges was appropriate.”
