A northeast Bend resident who saw two teen boys on his property and a third knocking on a neighbor’s door called police – and that led to the recovery of items stolen in a home burglary and three arrests, police said Tuesday.

Officers were sent around 9:30 a.m. last Wednesday to a reported trespass in the area of Northeast 11 th Street and Lafayette Avenue, said Lt. Jason Maniscalco.

The caller advised seeing two juveniles on his property and another knocking on his neighbor’s door, Maniscalco said.

The caller said he’d watched as the teens walked from his property to a nearby trail at the base of Pilot Butte. Maniscalco said he reported they had walked to the trail with backpacks, but returned without them.

Officers contacted one juvenile in the area and he told them his friends were standing on the caller’s property, but left when he yelled at them, Maniscalco said.

The reporting party showed police where the teens had gone, and officers found abandoned backpacks. Maniscalco said the backpacks contained items from a home at 1155 NE Ninth Street.

An investigation found three Bend teens, two ages 16 and one 17, had entered a detached garage through a dog door, Maniscalco said. They then found a crowbar and used it to force their way into the home, where they stole several items, including a computer, jewelry and tools.

Most of the stolen items were recovered, the lieutenant added.

An investigation also determined the teens had planned and were about to commit a second home burglary when the neighbor confronted them.

Two of the teens were taken into custody and lodged last Wednesday at the Deschutes County Juvenile Detention Center. The third was contacted and arrested on Monday, Maniscalco said.

The three face charges of first- and second-degree burglary, first-degree theft, criminal conspiracy (a felony) and theft by receiving.
