KTVZ

Deschutes County will observe National Crime Victims’ Rights Week during the week of April 10 -16.

Each April since 1981, The United States Department of Justice’s Office for Victims of Crime has helped lead communities in the annual observance of victims’ rights. During this week, communities across the country promote victims’ rights, honor crime victims and recognize those who advocate on their behalf.

“Deschutes County residents are privileged to live in a community with such strong support for victims of crime,” said District Attorney John Hummel. “Victim advocates, Deschutes County Juvenile Community Justice, Saving Grace, KIDS Center, CASA and many other service groups, agencies and organizations work tirelessly to advocate for victims of crime. On behalf of victims of crime, I thank them for their service.”

Local events kick off at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, April 12 at an outdoor ceremony on the steps of the District Attorney’s Office (1164 NW Bond Street, Bend). The Deschutes County Board of Commissioners will read a proclamation declaring the week of April 10 -16 as Crime Victims’ Rights Week in Deschutes County. District Attorney Hummel will then announce the local winners of the awards for service to victims of crime.

“Each of our community partners play an important role in helping to build healthy and safe communities across Deschutes County,” said Sheriff L. Shane Nelson. “This week, we’re proud to honor their efforts to help build trust and restore hope for victims of crime.”

This event is open to the public and community members are encouraged to attend.

“This National Crime Victims’ Rights Week, we express our sincere gratitude for those community members, victim service providers and criminal justice professionals who serve and support victims of crime,” said Deschutes County Chair, Alan Unger. “This is extremely important work, and we thank them for all that they do.”
