Community helps Bend boy get his special bike
We told you earlier this year about the Great Bike Giveaway, a program providing bikes for disabled children. When 4-year-old Mason Jordan of Bend wasn’t chosen, viewers rallied, raising enough money in just 24 hours to get him his own specialized bike.
Mason’s bike was delivered just a few days ago — just in time for summer. Now his mom wants the community to know how grateful they are.
“It’ll give him the ability to be a child. I mean, every child needs a bike,” Tashina Jordan, Mason’s mother, said Sunday.
When Mason’s story first aired in April, it didn’t take long for the void to be filled.
“When I saw all those donations on the website. I was just like, ‘Oh my gosh. This is amazing!’ And I just started crying,” Jordan said.
The specially designed bike cost about $4,000. It has custom features allowing Mason to ride it all by himself.
“It’ll give him so much independence, and it’ll help strengthen his legs, ” Jordan said.
She said her son has come a long way.
“He was deemed a vegetable by his doctors and wasn’t supposed to do anything,” she recalled. “And he’s learning to walk and he’s using a communication device, and he’s really smart — he knows his entire alphabet, and he knows all of his numbers, one to 100.”.
Jordan said Mason loves to read, and give hugs and kisses. And now he has a new activity to put a smile on his face.
“It’s really amazing that the community came together to help this little boy, my son,” she said. “Thank you to everyone who donated — just a huge thank you!”
