Umpqua CC to mark year since mass shooting
ROSEBURG, Ore. (AP) — A moment of silence is planned to mark the one-year anniversary of the mass shooting at a community college campus near Roseburg.
The Register-Guard reports (https://is.gd/Mv3RdH ) that Saturday marks one year after Chris Harper Mercer killed nine people and injured nine others at Umpqua Community College before dying in a shootout with police Oct. 1. To mark the somber occasion the campus will hold a moment of silence on campus at 10:38 a.m. Friday, the same time of the shooting but one day early.
College spokeswoman Anne-Marie Levis says two bagpipers will play after the moment of silence.
Other memorials are planned in the area for Friday. The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office and other county officials have planned a moment of silence on Friday afternoon, followed by a pastor’s invocation.
Meanwhile, The Oregonian/OregonLive reports (https://is.gd/ScUbrp ) that the demolition of Snyder Hall is scheduled to begin the week of Oct. 17. A new building is expected to be ready for classes by next fall.
A committee of students, teachers and administrators voted that Snyder Hall should be demolished and rebuilt with a new design.
Lawmakers have approved $6 million to replace Snyder Hall and improve security across campus. The rebuild is estimated at $4.2 million.
