NE Oregon HS student wins city council seat

IRRIGON, Ore. (AP) — A high school student in Irrigon has more than homework to worry about come January as she is being sworn into the Irrigon City Council.

The East Oregonian reports (https://is.gd/bZTy1i ) that 18-year-old Marlina Avila Serratos on Tuesday won her bid for a City Council seat and will be sworn in at her first meeting on Jan. 17. She will serve a four-year term.

Avila Serratos essentially ran unopposed for her seat, as four candidates ran for four openings. Avila Serratos will fill the position vacant since Christine Sorenson died in January.

Avila Serratos says she became interested in applying for the position earlier this year after befriending a city manager. She says she is excited to represent Irrigon’s Hispanic population.
