Portland man indicted in fatal bicyclist crash

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — A Portland man who police say was driving with a suspended license when he fatally struck a bicyclist with his SUV has been indicted.

The Oregonian/OregonLive reports (https://goo.gl/U1k83A ) 42-year-old Joel Schrantz was indicted on an upgraded charge of second-degree manslaughter.

Schrantz was previously accused of criminally negligent homicide in the Oct. 29 death of 55-year-old Mitchell York and released from jail after posting bail. Court records show he was indicted on the new charge Nov. 8 and booked back into jail Wednesday.

Schrantz is being held on $250,000 bail.

Portland police say his SUV skidded while heading toward the St. Johns Bridge, sliding into opposing traffic and crashing into York. Police say York was thrown off his bike and underneath another car.

Schrantz told police he didn’t see York until just before hitting him.
