Teen pleads not guilty in shooting of Portland protester

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — An 18-year-old man has pleaded not guilty to a 17-count indictment in connection with the shooting of a protester on the Morrison Bridge earlier this month, along with another unrelated shooting.

Shamar Xavier Hunter entered his plea Tuesday, The Oregonian reported (http://bit.ly/2gIBs0e ). Hunter and a 14-year-old are accused in the shooting of Luis Paredes, who suffered a gunshot wound to the leg on the bridge while protesting the presidential election.

Police say they believe the shooting occurred because the car couldn’t make it over the Morrison Bridge as some protesters were walking in the street and blocking traffic.

The indictment charges Hunter with attempted murder with a firearm, attempted first-degree assault, two counts of second-degree assault with a firearm, third-degree assault and four counts of unlawful use of a weapon in connection with the Nov. 12 bridge shooting. He also faces additional charges for another shooting Nov. 1.
