Meals on Wheels receives tribal grant

The Council on Aging of Central Oregon is pleased to announce receipt of a $7,500 grant from the Cow Creek Umpqua Indian Foundation in support of Meals on Wheels in Deschutes County. This is the third year in a row that the Council has received support from the Foundation.

The award will help the Council provide nutritious meals, that include fresh fruits and vegetables, to homebound seniors in the Bend, La Pine, Redmond and Sisters areas. Each year, the Council – working in partnership with senior centers and with the invaluable support of volunteer drivers – delivers approximately 60,000 Meals on Wheels to more than 550 at risk seniors, aged 60 years and older, in Deschutes County.

These meals help to prevent hunger, improve nutrition, guard against elder neglect, and combat social isolation among seniors. Many of the seniors served live alone, on fixed and limited incomes, with few family supports. Meals on Wheels are critical to these seniors remaining safe, secure and independent in their own homes for as long as possible.
