Bend-La Pine Schools celebrate college, career pathways
The hallways, playgrounds and classrooms in Bend-La Pine Schools soon will be filled with school spirit as thousands of students and staff don the colors of their favorite college, university, trade school or other institute of post-secondary education during the annual College Day celebration on Thursday.
Many schools are also hosting college and career related events on this day to get students thinking about their futures and post-secondary education.
“College Day is fun, engaging way for staff members to share their passion for higher education,” said Superintendent Shay Mikalson. “We want our students to dream big – whether that’s pursuing a trade school or university education – and this event is a great way to get students thinking about their future path.”
Here are a few examples of how schools will be celebrating College Day:
Rosland Elementary School students will answer a special writing assignment to get them thinking about their futures. They will complete either a job application, college application or question about what they want to do when they grow up. One of the school’s bulletin board is also covered in college and trade school information. Bear Creek Elementary School parents will visit students’ classes to talk about careers. The goal is for parents to share a wide range of career opportunities with students. La Pine Middle School staff members are hosting a door decorating contest to see who can show the most college spirit. Members of the public can vote for their favorites on the school’s Facebook page. Pacific Crest Middle School students are interviewing teachers about the college where they earned their degree. Through this interactive process, they are learning about various schools, programs of study and clubs and sports. The results of the interviews will be posted in the hallway on Thursday. Marshall High School students started celebrating College Day early – every senior traveled to Central Oregon Community College for application day on Nov. 14. They learned about the college and interested students received assistance filling out an application. Mountain View High School will participate in a competition for spirit prizes, based on their college spirit. Nutrition Services is hosting a coloring contest for students in conjunction with College Day. Elementary school cafeterias will be decorated with students’ artwork. Students participating in the contest will have a chance to win a College Day T-shirt.
