Haystack Reservoir recreation area closes for paving

The federal Bureau of Reclamation said Monday it has temporarily closed the West Shore Recreation Area at Haystack Reservoir until May 4 to pave the roads, campsites and parking lots at the reservoir, located about 10 miles south of Madras.

The project will use a phased approach to complete the paving, and the public will still have options to camp and access water during the partial closures, officials said.

The North Shore Fishing Pier day-use area will remain open for day-use recreation activities. North Shore is open year-round from dawn to dusk, with an accessible fishing pier to enjoy fishing, sightseeing, and access to the reservoir. Parking at North Shore is free of charge. The South Shore Group Campground will remain open for the 2018 season.

Haystack Reservoir borders Crook, Deschutes and Jefferson counties and is impounded by Haystack Dam, which was built in 1957. It is owned by the Bureau of Reclamation and operated by the North Unit Irrigation District that supplies irrigation water to the area.
