Include pets, animals in wildfire disaster plans

As wildfire season approaches, the Pet Evacuation Team reminds families to include their pets and other animals in their home disaster plan. Typically, you cannot take your pets to the Red Cross shelter.

Have the following assembled and ready in a convenient location:

TO GO KIT For Companion Animals:

Crate or carrier for each animal

3-5 day supply of pet’s food, dishes, can opener, spoon, etc.

3-5 day supply of pet’s medications

Leash, collar w/ID

Poop bags or litter box

Information sheet w/photo of you & your pet, veterinarian contact #, ID including license # and microchip # , special handling instructions, behaviors, etc.

TO GO KIT for Large Animals or Livestock:

*Method of transport ie. Horse or stock trailer, or contact info for someone who has one.

Leads, halters

Medications

Information sheet w/photo and ID

Animal safe marker *If time doesn’t allow for load transport, remove halters to avoid becoming entangled in brush or trees, mark w/phone #, release animal. Close all barn doors & gates to avoid entrapment by fire.
