Mothers Against Drunk Driving holds second annual ‘Walk Like MADD’ event in Bend
(Update: Adding video, comments MADD official, honored DCSO sergeant)
BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) -- At Alpenglow Park in Bend, Mothers Against Drunk Driving also known as MADD, put on their second annual walk event -- Walk Like MADD Oregon.
MADD-Oregon Program Manager Cate Duke said, "This is an incredible opportunity for the community to come together and honor those that have been injured or killed in crashes and to support the families and friends that are left behind."
About 60 people came together to Walk Like Madd. MADD is a nonprofit working to end drunk driving. And for their second year, the organization was holding a community recognition for ODOT and local law enforcement officers.
Duke said, "We are recognizing Kent Vander Kamp, who is a longtime drug recognition expert who has done so much in this community with DUI investigations, law enforcement training, training other officers."
ODOT also was recognized this year, for the work that they do when closing the scene of an impaired driving crash.
Detective Sergeant Kent Vander Kamp said, "For me, it's amazing, humbling experience, because this is a collaborative effort between all the troopers, officers, deputies that I work with."
He added, "Every life saved in the DUII investigation is a triumph, and is my 'why,' and why I get up every morning, to help with DUII investigations."
MADD's fundraising goal is $35,000, and as of Saturday, they had raised more than $8,000. Funds raised from Walk Like MADD events go straight back into the program in Oregon.
