Cause, owner still sought in CRR house fire

A fire that began in a small outbuilding at Crooked River Ranch Friday night apparently spread to a car, then to a double-wide manufactured home that was destroyed, Interim Fire Chief Mark Wilson said.

A neighbor apparently spotted and called in the fire around 7:15 p.m. at 8383 NW Ice Avenue, on the Deschutes County wide of the rural subdivision, Wilson told NewsChannel 21 early Saturday.

No one was at home when the first of about 15 firefighters arrived, the chief said.

“It was just getting up into the eaves when we arrived,” Wilson said, in the area where the two sides of the home are joined together.

There were no injuries and no other nearby structures were threatened as fire crews spent several hours putting out the blaze.

Crooked River Ranch had several engines on scene, while Cloverdale and Jefferson County each sent an engine crew as well, with Jefferson County providing fire district coverage.

Deschutes County sheriff’s deputies still were working Saturday to locate the home’s owner. listed in county property tax records as Byron Bergstad.

CRR Fire Marshal Gary White said Saturday at the scene they had yet to determine the cause of the fire, which caused an estimated $35,000 in losses.

The American Red Cross said Sunday it was assisting an adult and pet who lived at the home. Wilson said Monday they still have not reached the owner, and the cause of the fire remained under investigation.
