Police: Pulled gun triggers Mtn. View HS lockout
A report of someone pulling a gun in a northeast Bend convenience store parking lot led to a brief lock-out of Mountain View High School Friday morning.
Police rushed to the U.S. Market at 27th Street and Butler Market Road shortly after 7 a.m., responding to a call, and the school to the south locked the doors and allowed no one to enter.
Officers said a man was walking from the market to the gas pumps when someone in a passing car exchanged words with the pedestrian and followed the walker to their car.
The pedestrian told police they felt threatened and took a gun from the vehicle.
A worker at the store called it a “little scary” incident of road rage and said the incident and response went on for about 20 minutes.
Police said the gun owner did not point it at anyone and that it was an unusual case of road rage, in which no one has been charged or arrested.
The school was in a precautionary lock-out mode for about 12 minutes, according to a posting on Mountain View’s Website, which said that “students and staff did a great job of following the district procedure for this type of situation.” Officials said they were able to resume normal schedules before the school day began.
In a lock-out situation, schools secure their perimeter and no one is allowed inside. Trinity Lutheran School across Butler Market Road also was secured in similar fashion.
