Shot fired, man wounded during SE Bend traffic stop
Bend police are investigating an incident in which one of two men in a car pulled over for a traffic violation Friday night was shot and wounded inside the car.
The shooting took place around 8:15 p.m. on Badger Road near Southeast Third Street and Walmart after an officer conducted a traffic stop on a car for an unspecified traffic violation, said Capt. Paul Kansky.
The car’s driver was a 27-year-old Bend man, accompanied by a 24-year-old male passenger, also of Bend, Kansky said.
“Gunshots were fired from within the vehicle while the officer was conducting a traffic violation investigation,” the captain said in a brief news release early Saturday.
One of the men inside the car sustained a gunshot wound and was taken to St. Charles Bend for treatment, Kansky said.
“The police officer was not involved in the shooting, but rather was a witness to the incident during the traffic stop,” Kansky added.
No other details have been released, as the investigation continues, but Kansky said “more information will be released at a later time.”
Witnesses said Bend Fire medics and numerous police converged on the scene to assist in the investigation, leaving many wondering what had taken place.
