Bend working on solutions to Galveston parking issue
Bend city officials said Wednesday they have a plan in the works to help ease the parking issues in the Northwest Galveston Avenue neighborhood.
City officials say the Galveston corridor project includes a plan to add parking along the road and improve bike lanes for residents.
The project is in the early design stage.
Nick Arnis, the city’s transportation manager, told NewsChannel 21 Wednesday officials are working on installing more diagonal parking along the Harmon and Columbia triangle.
City officials will also conduct a parking survey for residents this summer.
Some neighbors living off Federal and 12th streets say their neighborhood is being overrun by cars looking for places to park they say pubs in the area attract many patrons, but don’t add enough parking for them.
Aubrey Beard, the owner of Westside Shorty’s day care, has seen the neighborhood change a lot in the last decade.
“Some people are disrespectful, and they park in the people’s parking lot, and they don’t think about the feelings of others,” Beard said.
Arnis said the city is aware of the neighbors’ frustration and are working on finding a solution.
The city is working on balance with existing neighborhood and the new business coming in in the Galveston corridor, Arnis said.
City officials will be holding a open house on March 2 to discuss the West Side General Plan. Officials will talk about how transportation decisions could shape these neighborhoods on the Westside.
