KTVZ

Beginning this week, the Bureau of Land Management Prineville District is installing two new trailheads in the Cline Buttes area west of Redmond, officials said..

Construction began this week on the Cascade View Trailhead, one of two proposed trailheads to serve the buttes portion of the Cline Buttes Recreation Area. It is located about seven miles west of Redmond and will provide parking and non-motorized access for hikers, mountain bikers and equestrians. The parking area will include separate parking area for single vehicles and horse trailers and will include a small picnic area and toilets.

The trailhead construction will also include about 14 miles of horse trails and 24 miles of bicycle trails (pedestrians are able to use either trail system). A portion of the new trail construction, signing and reseeding will be completed this year, with additional trail development continuing in the future.

Construction on the second trailhead, Buckhorn Staging Area, will also begin in the next two weeks. The trailhead will provide motorized access for users north of state Highway 126, about eight miles west of Redmond. The staging area will include a gravel entrance road and parking area, toilet, kiosks, picnic tables and primitive camping area. Trail construction will occur this year and next.

Construction on the new trailheads is anticipated to take about 90 days. After the initial phase of construction, BLM staff will work with volunteers and youth crews to finish the projects by doing trail work, fence building, gate and sign installation, as well as reseeding and other tasks.

Both projects were partially funded through Oregon Parks and Recreation Department’s Recreation Trails Program grants.
