Fire destroys home in Crooked River Ranch
A Crooked River Ranch couple and their cat escaped as a flue fire spread to the attic space and destroyed their manufactured home early Friday morning, an official said.
Crews were called to the home in the 114000 block of Northwest Dove Road around 6:45 a.m., Crooked River Ranch Fire & Rescue Assistant Chief/Paramedic Sean Hartley said.
Hartley said the occupants already were up for the day and one went into the living room, found smoke, went outside and saw the flue fire.
The first crew to arrive found smoke pouring from the roof and eaves of the home, he said. Flames were found in the attic space between the ceiling and roof inside the home.
At first, it was not known if there was anyone inside, but a search turned up no occupants, as they had gotten out and were nearby with a group of onlookers.
The home had smoke alarms, but they were not working, Hartley said. He urged everyone to check your smoke alarms at least twice a year to ensure they are functioning properly.
Crews were on scene for about three hours performing overhaul. The fire official said extinguishing the fire and the overhaul work were hampered by the amount of items in the home.
The building and contents were a total loss, estimated at about $280,000, Hartley said.
American Red Cross assistance was not requested, he added.
Mutual-aid assistance was provided by the Redmond and Cloverdale fire departments and the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office.
