Bend man arrested, accused of eluding police
A Bend man who refused to pull over for a traffic stop Saturday afternoon in northeast Bend sped away and later swerved toward a patrol car before being found at a business and arrested, police said.
Shortly after 1 p.m., a Bend police officer tried to stop a white Dodge Neon near the intersection of Northeast Elk Court and Lotus Drive for traffic violations, including failure to display license plates and the driver’s failure to properly use a seat belt, Lt. Ken Mannix said.
As the officer began to make the stop, the driver, identified as Glen James Carroll, 45, sped away at high speed, Mannix said. The officer immediately terminated the pursuit due to safety concerns, instead pulling over along the road, he said.
About a minute later, the car passed the officer ‘ s parked patrol car going the other way and Carroll ” recklessly swerved his vehicle in the direction of the patrol vehicle, ” Mannix said in a news release.
Several officers responded to assist in searching the area, assisted by Deschutes County sheriff’s deputies.
Around 1:15 p.m., a Bend officer spotted Carroll’s car parked at 2570 NE Twin Knolls Drive, Mannix said. A short time later, Carroll was found inside a business, Spud Muffin Express, and taken into custody without further incident.
Carroll was booked into the county jail and held without bail on a parole violation. He is also facing new charges of felony attempt to elude police in a vehicle, reckless driving, misdemeanor driving with a suspended license and methamphetamine possession.
Court records show Carroll has been arrested on felony charges 25 times over the past 26 years, along with numerous misdemeanor charges and infractions.
Nearly three years ago, in August 2016, Carroll, then living in Redmond, was wanted for parole violation and refused to pull over for police, leading officers on a brief, slow-speed pursuit through downtown Redmond before spike strips prompted him to pull into a card-lock gas station, jump out of the moving car and run, but he was caught and arrested ..
Carroll was sentenced to 10 days in jail and a year of post-prison supervision, as well as a one-year driver’s license suspension.
In January of this year, Carroll was arrested on charges of fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer, reckless driving and carrying a concealed weapon. The latter charge was dismissed, but he was convicted of the first two and sentenced to 30 days in jail and a one-year driver’s license suspension.
