Quebec to impose a ‘significant’ fine on unvaccinated residents

Quebec Premier François Legault says the fine is "a question of fairness" for those who have gotten vaccinated.

The Canadian province of Quebec announced Tuesday that residents who have refused a Covid-19 vaccine will soon have to pay a fine.

The fines will be a way for the unvaccinated to contribute to an overburdened public health care system, authorities said.

“Right now, these people, they put a very important burden on our health care network, and I think it’s normal that the majority of the population is asking that there be a consequence,” Quebec Premier François Legault said at a news conference Tuesday.

“It’s a question also of fairness for the 90% of the population who made some sacrifices — and I think we owe them this kind of measure,” he added.

The fine would not apply to those with a medical exemption, and no details have been announced. However, Legault said the amount to be levied would be “significant.”

Nearly 90% of eligible Quebecers have received at least one dose of a Covid-19 vaccine, according to the Quebec government.

Public health officials say the vast majority of patients in Quebec hospitals remain unvaccinated. Officials have not said how many hospitalized Covid patients are unvaccinated.

Last week, Quebec announced that residents would have to be vaccinated to buy alcohol or cannabis. Quebec’s health minister, Christian Dubé, said in a tweet that after the announcement, vaccine appointments spiked.

“In just a few days, appointments for the 1st dose went from 1.5K per day to over 6K yesterday. Thank you to everyone who decided to get vaccinated. It is not too late to get your 1st dose. Protect yourself,” Dubé said.

Quebec, where nearly a quarter of all Canadians live, was one of the first provinces in Canada to introduce a vaccine passport. Proof of vaccination is required in order to eat in restaurants, go to the gym or attend sporting events.

And last month, an evening curfew was imposed for a second time to curb the spread of the virus.

Quebec is not the first to take such measures to encourage people to get the vaccine.

Last week, Italy made vaccination against Covid-19 mandatory for people 50 and older.

Proof of vaccination is already mandatory for teachers and health workers in Italy. And all employees have been required to show proof of vaccination or show a negative test before entering their workplace since October.

The new vaccine decree for those 50 and older removes the option to take a test instead of getting vaccinated. Those who refuse to get vaccinated risk a fine of 600-1,500 euros (approximately $680-$1,700), a government source told CNN on Thursday.

After five days they will lose their salary but will not be fired from their position. This means they can receive pay again if they get vaccinated, the source said.

For unvaccinated people who are 50 and older and who are unemployed or retired, there will be a fine of 100 euros, the source said.

Two days after the government announced the new measure, Italy registered a threefold increase of the vaccines administered daily to those from the age of 50, the vaccination campaign commissioner, Francesco Paolo Figliuolo, said Saturday.

Austria has also announced plans to make vaccination mandatory for those older than 14 starting next month. And over-60s in Greece will also have to get the vaccine starting January 16.

    1. Really I haven’t been to the doctor in 25 years last time I was there was for an emergency surgery. I am extremely healthy and you want to fine me for that. Lol. I think you should have to pay your own medical bills if your BMI is over the healthy range. It’s nice how you don’t care about the unhealthy people driving this pandemic but you want healthy people that are unaffected by this to pay a fine. You are a complete joke of a person.

        1. Your logic is completely flawed and cb proved it. But since your logic is so flawed you read what he posted and saw it as a confirmation of what you said.

      1. Using BMI as an indicator of health isn’t very accurate. Especially, for women who lift weights. I can be a size 0 or 2 and still considered obese. Whereas, people with hardly any muscle mass can be considered normal with high cholesterol, blood pressure, etc.

      2. A lot of overweight people dont choose to be overweight. Many of them have physiological issues like eating disorders and addiction problems.

As opposed to most of the people who dont get vaccinated who purposefully choose to as the vaccine is proven safe for almost everyone.

You’re trying to prove a point by making an apples and oranges comparison.

    2. And how many people that are fully vaxxed have gotten covid? How come schools can’t get enough staff due to covid positives with 100% vaxxed? St. CHarles with 50 employees out in 5 days, all fully vaxxed, many boosted. Wish KTVZ would report a update on those numbers. So Bob’s comment is actually very stupid.

      1. Those are called addictions, as in many of of those people have legitimate medical reasons for being in the shape they are in. Doesn’t mean they cant improve but it does place them above anti-vaxxers who are purposefully choosing their unhealthy lifestyle.

    1. Excessive alcohol use is responsible for more than 95,000 deaths in the United States each year, or 261 deaths per day. It is the third leading cause of preventable death and cost the nation $249 billion in 2010. That’s from the CDC. Safe to assume it’s similar in Quebec. No burden on the healthcare system there, SMH.

  1. So I got cancer. The doc recommended I get chemotherapy. I said I would look into other therapies first. Then they fined me for not getting the chemo and said it would help pay for cancer treatment for others.
(This a fake story used to illustrate the nonsense portrayed by the government of quebec)

    1. So I got the plague. And instead of taking a simple shot to cure it I decide I know what is best because I listen to Joe Rogan and Aaron Rodgers and I do not care about anyone but myself. Then they fine me and use that money to help all the people I hurt with my ignorance.
      Seems pretty good to me.

      1. So the shot cures COVID? You are very misinformed. Yes you are right I do not care about you or anyone else other than my family. It’s not my responsibility and never will be. It’s your responsibility for your health nobody else’s.

  2. I hate to see us descend into calling people “stupid” who are not the least bit stupid but have just looked at the available information (and possible mis-information) and come to a different conclusion than we have. You don’t have to spend a long time on the computer to find plenty of reasons to fear Covid 19. And you don’t have to spend a long time on the same computer to find reasons to fear the vaccines and to find alternative treatments that appear to work really well. You also find highly paid scientists (paid by us taxpayers to have our backs) who tell us that these vaccines are “safe and effective and the best way to fight Covid”. In a more innocent world the word of those scientists should be enough to make your decision. Then you find that although we taxpayers pay these scientists’ salaries, the big pharmaceutical companies pay their bonuses, so our trusted scientists have strong financial incentives to come up with the vaccine answer and to squash any other answers. The vaccines appear to increase your chances of surviving Covid by a good margin. They also do not appear to be effective in controlling the spread of Covid through our population. And there is a small but definite risk of bad side effects from the shot which also appear to increase with increasing number of times you get the shot. And the vaccines seem to increase your risk of various other diseases shortening your lifespan. So a jab with this many shades of grey should never be “mandated”. And Quebec’s “mandate with penalty” is taking a really bad idea and compounding the insanity.

    1. “I hate to see us descend into calling people “stupid” who are not the least bit stupid but have just looked at the available information (and possible mis-information) and come to a different conclusion than we have.”

When you look at facts and come to a “different conclusion” than what the facts tell you, then yes, that is absolutely stupidity and people absolutely deserve to be called on it.

If someone makes a dumb choice, it doesn’t make the choice not dumb because they made. It just means they made a dumb choice.

  3. It’s been said before, but I will post it again.

For the first time in history, the ineffectiveness of a medication is being blamed on the people who did not use it.

    1. Considering thats how vaccination works, its completely legitimate. Its not the first time in history though. Its just the first time in US history that the government hasnt stepped in and forced people to do the right thing and get vaccinated to protect society.
