MADRAS, Ore. (KTVZ) -- A man was hit and killed after being struck by a vehicle on Saturday along Highway 97, near milepost 101, in Jefferson County.

James Edwin Legore, 63, of Sandy, Utah, was driving a Ford Explorer when he struck Jared Elijah Cooper, 38, of Madras.

The crash caused a closure of the highway for approximately 5 hours during the investigation, conducted by the Oregon State Police and assisted by the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office and ODOT.

The preliminary investigation found that Legore's vehicle was on the shoulder of the roadway and began to merge into the northbound lanes when Cooper was struck.
