REDMOND, Ore. (KTVZ) – A Redmond man was arrested this week after he tried to run from officers, and a later search of his backpack turned up nearly 400 grams of methamphetamine and a small amount of cocaine, police said Thursday.

Redmond Police Street Crimes detectives arrested Christopher Lee Hughes, 39, on drug delivery and possession charges, Lieutenant Eric Beckwith said.

The Street Crimes detectives, working with patrol officers and the Central Oregon Drug Enforcement Team, contacted Hughes in the 100 block of West Antler Avenue, Beckwith said. He tried to escape on foot but was apprehended and booked into the Deschutes County Jail.

Execution of a subsequent search warrant for Hughes’ backpack found 397 grams of methamphetamine, three grams of cocaine and “items common to drug trafficking, such as scales and baggies,” Beckwith said.

Along with drug-related crimes, Hughes was arrested on an outstanding warrant for parole violation, for which he remained held Thursday without bail, as well as a restraining order violation, escape, resisting arrest and an outstanding sex abuse case.

Beckwith said, “The Redmond Police Department would like to recognize the cooperative efforts of CODE and Redmond patrol officers in taking Mr. Hughes into custody.”

Hughes, who listed an address on Bachelor Road east of Bend in court documents, was arraigned Wednesday on the felony and misdemeanor charges and is scheduled to return to court next Wednesday for arraignment on an expected formal indictment, court records show.
