Highway 97 wrong-way DUII driver charged after bumper move, use of Taser
DCSO deputy, Sunriver officer injured taking woman into custody
SUNRIVER, Ore. (KTVZ) – It took a bumper-to-bumper maneuver to stop a Canby woman who for a time drove the wrong way on Highway 97 near Sunriver early Friday morning, Deschutes County sheriff’s deputies said. She refused to comply with law enforcement, even after use of a Taser, so she was wrestled to the ground and taken into custody on DUII and other charges.
The sheriff’s office got a call around 4:40 a.m. about a newer-model pickup truck driving northbound in the southbound lanes of the highway near milepost 151, south of Lava Butte, Sgt. Jayson Janes said.
As deputies arrived in the area, a Sunriver police officer spotted the driver – now in the proper lane, heading south – near the Cottonwood Road exit, Janes said. The officer tried to stop the truck, but the driver later identified as Angel Grose, 43, kept heading south, with the Sunriver officer in pursuit, joined by a deputy.
At the Vandevert Road intersection, Grose turned around and started heading north, with the pursuit continuing until the area of milepost 151, when the driver attempted a U-turn.
Knowing the driver would be heading into oncoming traffic if not stopped, the deputy used his patrol car to stop the truck by placing his bumper against the bumper of the pickup, which was going slowly at the time, Janes said. The move caused minimal damage to the patrol car and no injuries, he added.
Grose was “not compliant” when contacted, Janes said in a news release. The Sunriver officer used a Taser in an attempt to gain control of the woman, without success.
She “was taken to the ground and continued resisting law enforcement,” Janes wrote, but they eventually were able to gain control of the woman and take her into custody.
The deputy and Sunriver officer received minor injuries while taking Grose into custody.
Bend Police Department officers also responded to the scene, to investigate the reported crash – and while they were investigating, their patrol car was struck from behind by another car, Janes said. He had no further details, but scanner reports indicated the crash resulted in no injuries.
Grose was taken to St. Charles Bend for evaluation, where she was cited and released to hospital staff on charges of DUII, felony attempt to elude, resisting arrest, first-degree criminal mischief, aggravated harassment and reckless driving.
