Oregon faith leaders push for gun control initiatives

By Eric Tegethoff, Oregon News Service

PORTLAND, Ore. (KTVZ) - Some faith leaders want 2020 to be the year Oregon passes what they see as better gun-control laws.

The group Lift Every Voice Oregon, made up of leaders from different faiths, has submitted three petitions for measures to appear on the November 2020 ballot.

The measures would restrict the sale of semi-automatic firearms through tightened background checks, raise the minimum purchase age from 18 to 21 and ban the sale of high-capacity ammunition magazines.

One of the chief petitioners, Rabbi Michael Cahana, says faith leaders see addressing gun violence as a "moral imperative."

"In our faith traditions, we are told that we can't stand idly by while our neighbor bleeds," says Cahana. "[It] means that we have to take responsibility when there is a crisis, as there is in gun violence in our country."

Faith leaders, including Cahana, tried to get a similar measure restricting semi-automatic weapon sales on the ballot in 2018 in the wake of shooting at a Parkland, Florida, high school. However, that effort ran into legal issues.

If the state approves this year's initiatives, backers will need to gather at least 112,000 signatures this spring to get them onto the ballot.

Cahana says he's heard support from gun owners for these measures, believing they are a sensible way to keep people safe.

"We are not trying to tell people that they can't protect themselves. We're not trying to tell people that they can't hunt," says Cahana. "We're simply saying there are some weapons that are really weapons of war, that don't belong on our streets and in our homes."

These petitions are just a few of the potential measures addressing firearms in 2020. Others pending review would establish gun storage laws, require an annual firearm-safety class for Oregon sixth-graders and create a constitutional right to own semi-automatic weapons.

      1. That is the admitted goal of you progressive clowns. Here they are in their own words.
Why should ANYONE take you seriously when you are so ill informed and ignorant?

“Mandatory gun buy back” – Robert Francis Orourke, former democrat presidential candidate
“Mr. and Mrs. America, turn them in” -Diane Feinstein D-Ca
“If you really want to deal with the problem, you have to get rid of the assault weapons that are out there, and a gun buyback becomes probably the only way that can be achieved,” – John Donohue, democrat senate candidate.
“Assault weapons should be banned” – Joe Biden, democrat presidential candidate
“BINGO. Yo’re right if you have an assault weapon. The fact of the matter is they should be illegal PERIOD” when asked if a “Biden adminstration os going to come for my guns by Anderson Coopser.
“I would institute a national “buyback” program” – Joe Biden, Democrat presidential candidate
“the federal government must ban assault weapons and implement a buyback program to get assault weapons off the streets.” – Bernie Sanders, Democrat presidential candidate

          1. Then who are we to believe? Lying democrats who openly admit on national TV that they, do indeed, plan to take our guns, or people like you who scoff at the idea???

            1. you have been hollering the same shtuff for years – you only believe your own noise, regardless of what actually happens, or doesn’t – when will you get tired of your own silliness? – you are very good for business!

          2. And that’ how they became the #1 Gun salesman of the year award. It’s you Liberals that are the ones pushing gun sales! Every time one of you starts limiting firearm ownership, the sales numbers climb. And you’re too stupid to tie the two events together . . . The more you scream for gun bans and gun laws, the more guns people buy.

  1. Cahana says he’s heard support from gun owners for these measures, believing they are a sensible way to keep people safe.

“We are not trying to tell people that they can’t protect themselves. We’re not trying to tell people that they can’t hunt,” says Cahana. “We’re simply saying there are some weapons that are really weapons of war, that don’t belong on our streets and in our homes.”

More lies and propaganda B.S… You haven’t heard from gun owners who support these measures because every law abiding gun owner knows that none of the three suggestions will make any changes in shootings; none… The term weapons of war is subject to interpretation, and used to sensationalize their cause.
The ban on the sales of high capacity magazines is another thing that won’t change anything.
These idiots neglect to mention that there are already hundreds of thousands or more of them that are legally owned and already in circulation, and yet they try to convince people there idea will make a difference. Very misleading to those who believe all the garbage that they read or are told by these groups, but the groups thrive on those people…

    1. run in circles screaming with your arms flailing in the air – you did it for 8 years while Obama was president and made the gun firearms purveyors a ton of money – remember?

        1. Yes they did. It was great… Obama was even nice enough to ship guns across
the border to help support the Mexican cartels.
What a guy. What a legacy, what an idiot.

      1. Nope actually I don’t remember doing that because I didn’t… Obama was no different than the rest of the liberals. They all campaign with promises of passing the latest and greatest new gun control measures, as well as other promises, but they know they will
never deliver on any of it because their promises are only for their own personal,
and political gain. Rest assured, if they actually thought they were competent enough, and it wasn’t political suicide, they would try and confiscate firearms.
I have no fear of Dems because they have a proven track record of failure.

      1. Yes, it is, now you will need to go through and pass all the background checks and permit options and you could legally own one if you can afford it and find one for sale.

          1. If you have the money for the ammo, the tax stamps, and money to buy your rocket launcher . . . have at it! You can fire it at any approved range your little heart desires! (Just stay within the legal requirements of owning and firing.) Heck, instead of a rocket launcher, why not buy yourself a tank? Maybe a jet fighter?

    1. Yes you will. You folks always say you won’t but I keep seeing them take your trucks and the trailers you live in and your rugrats too. You never do anything with those weapons you get so fired up about.

      1. Says the yellow belly behind a fake name. My side has already stood. And died. None of us are cowards. You…lol… you run your mouth anonymously from a news site chat board

Gear up, champ…. as you said… this’ll be fun

  2. Another group trying to erode the Constitution. Guns are not the problem. Bad/sick people are the problem. Guns have always been in American homes, but, this mass shooting problem is new. Figure out why people are now doing these mass shooting/stabbings and you can solve the problem.

      1. Bad/sick people??? Many buy guns for self defense . . . no different than buying locks for your doors or bars for your windows or installing a security system. No different than not leaving your keys in your cars. No different than getting a flu shot every year. No different than having a fire hydrant system between the house and the garage, if you live on a farm. No different than having a fire extinguisher in your house/apartment. These are all things normal, intelligent people have/do. Just like a fire truck . . . police are just minutes away, when seconds count.

      1. Supplied by Eric Holder and Obummer, for which action both should be in jail for trafficking the guns. Guns which were proven to have caused the death of at least one border patrol agent.

      2. Not sure where did you get this complete nonsense. Only about 10% of illegal firearms in Mexico are traced back the US.
Also please don’t try to tell anyone that fully automatic firearms are obtained from the US and not from Chinese or Ukrainian arms dealers.

          1. Might want to read a bit more and get back to math class:
            “By the Numbers
As we discussed in a previous analysis, the 90 percent number was derived from a June 2009 U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) report to Congress on U.S. efforts to combat arms trafficking to Mexico (see external link).

According to the GAO report, some 30,000 firearms were seized from criminals by Mexican authorities in 2008. Of these 30,000 firearms, information pertaining to 7,200 of them (24 percent) was submitted to the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) for tracing. Of these 7,200 guns, only about 4,000 could be traced by the ATF, and of these 4,000, some 3,480 (87 percent) were shown to have come from the United States.

This means that the 87 percent figure relates to the number of weapons submitted by the Mexican government to the ATF that could be successfully traced and not from the total number of weapons seized by Mexican authorities or even from the total number of weapons submitted to the ATF for tracing. In fact, the 3,480 guns positively traced to the United States equals less than 12 percent of the total arms seized in Mexico in 2008 and less than 48 percent of all those submitted by the Mexican government to the ATF for tracing. This means that almost 90 percent of the guns seized in Mexico in 2008 were not traced back to the United States….”

    1. You mean like letting drug cartels take control of our cities and country side? At least Mexico is trying to stop open borders to their country . . . unlike Liberals in this country. Like locking criminals up in luxury prisons? Oh wait a minute, that’s only in the US. Like letting criminals go with just a slap on the wrist? Oh wait, that’s not the way the justice system works in Mexico. Like giving citizen rights to illegals? Nope, they don’t do that in Mexico! Like protecting criminals in sanctuary cities? Nope, that’s a Liberal thing here. Like giving illegals food, housing, free medical, etc. . . . Not in Mexico! Corruption? Yeah, we both have that one . . . we call them activist judges and Democrats . . . Um, make that politicians in general!

  3. “Weapons of war,” they call them. But their previous initiatives targeted common hunting rifles. Do a search on “BAR Mark II Safari with BOSS.” Their iniative would have banned this rifle simply because it is semi-auto and has a recoil reducer on the barrel. These people are liars with an agenda who are ignoring facts and unbiased statistics.

    1. You must be a horrible shot. I’ve been hunting for over 50 years and even in my old age do not require a semi-auto. Try a lil’ target practice there buckaroo!

      1. You think that people choose semi-autos because of poor marksmanship? I don’t require a semi-auto, I only prefer one. I’ve taken 19 elk in the past 30 years with a total of 38 rounds of ammunition, almost exclusively with open sights. Many of those were kill shots to end suffering. I started my military career at Ft. Benning in 1992 and I haven’t quite retired yet. I’m no sniper, but I cannot tell you the last time I qualified anything but expert at the range. It’s been at least ten years.

    2. The old flint lock is a weapon of war. Notice they never define “common sense” or “weapon of war.” Because the end goal is a completely disarmed citizenry.

      1. Responding with facts doesn’t faze them . . . BTW, have you noticed that you can no longer order flintlock kits on-line? Same with cap and ball . . . It looks like they’ve been banned as well.

    3. “BAR Mark II Safari with BOSS.” I would bet that there isn’t an anti-gun person anywhere that knows what that rifle truly is without looking it up. They aren’t even smart enough to know the difference between semi auto and automatics, yet they classify everything as an automatic or machine gun to sensationalize their agenda because it scares the sheeple…

I’ve talked to people before that were so stupid that they thought rifles with the BOSS, or other recoil reducers were actually silencers. These people people should stand without ear protection about 15 feet to the side of someone when they are shooting a rifle that has the BOSS or similar system attached to the barrel… My personal opinion is that if someone needs a recoil reducing device on a hunting rifle, they are probably afraid of it, and would be better served with a smaller caliber rifle.
I don’t have a problem with people having their own opinion, but they should at least have the decency to educate themselves, instead of looking like clueless idiots.

      1. Why YES, YES they are! They can get a Liberal’s panties in a twist by simply being black! Liberals swoon at the looks of their finely contoured outlines . . . Liberals will gather in large groups, yelling and screaming for a chance to get your guns away from you! Liberal hearts pound over the magazine capacities, flash suppressors, compensaters, optics, and are triggered by trigger control. Black guns aren’t cool anymore . . . now they come in tiger prints, pink, purple, and lime green. Let’s not forget their cool names and nicknames as well . . . the Bushmaster, the Defender, the Judge!

  4. they all read revelations isn’t the world going to have these problem’s before the end. hell they’re preaching it. if god’s time is coming why are your should be happy it getting so close.

  5. Disarmed Jews? What’s the worst that can happen? Why don’t we hear from Pro-Gun faith leaders and pro-gun religious groups. No story from the “Jews for Preservation of Firearm Ownership?” Or the Chistian and Muslim pro 2a groups? And just in time for the new year. Get ready for a full court press. Now that democrats have nothing stopping them they will indeed come for our guns.

  6. In the interest of fair and balanced journalism why were there not any “faith leaders” interviewed who think we have too many gun control laws on the books now already? We know there are many, actually many more than are afraid of an inanimate object.

    1. They didn’t interview any of the opposing “faith leaders”, as they thought they would be armed and they were terrified. Personally, I know a number of “faith leaders” that carry concealed in the pulpit . . . and that includes in Bend.

  7. “We’re simply saying there are some weapons that are really weapons of war, that don’t belong on our streets and in our homes.”

In other words “we are smarter than you, we know what is best”
