Redmond, Sisters Cub Scouts race their cars in annual Pinewood Derby event
REDMOND, Ore. (KTVZ) -- A 50-plus year tradition for Cub Scouts, the Redmond and Sisters packs held their annual Pinewood Derby Saturday at the St. Thomas Catholic Church gym.
It's estimated that over 50 million kids have built Pinewood Derby cars throughout the world. Rules for Pinewood Derby are outlined here: https://www.scoutshop.org/pwd-rules.
Redmond and Sisters Cub Scouts have been working on designing and building their Pinewood Derby cars over the last two months.
Scouts checked in their cars for weight and regulation, and to make adjustments at the tune-up table as needed before they raced on a timed track. After the competition, awards were given for fastest time by age group, judge’s pick and best design.
Troop 27 Scouts from Redmond were on hand to help run the race heats. Redmond Police were there as well and helped choose the “most creative” and “judges' pick” awards.
"We look forward to Pinewood Derby every year!" said Jennifer Stephens, Pack 27 parent and committee chair.
"Pinewood Derby isn't just a one-day event," she said. "The Scouts brainstorm their design, help sand, paint, and build the car. Then on race day, they get to see their creation in action! The planning and lessons learned throughout the hands-on process, makes the Pinewood Derby Race really special. Pinewood Derby is a positive experience for Cub Scouts, parents, and pack leaders."
Scouting creates opportunities through programs and activities that allow youth ages 5-18 to try new things, provide service to others, build self-confidence and reinforce ethical standards.
