Two Sisters High School students face backlash over alleged racist TikTok video

SISTERS, Ore. (KTVZ) — Two students at Sisters High School are facing criticism online after a TikTok video allegedly showed them singing lyrics containing racial slurs and other offensive language.

According to social media posts shared widely online, the students were filmed singing along to "Lay Me Down Some Rails," a song associated with David Allan Coe. The lyrics of the song contain racial slurs as well as references to segregation and lynching.

The video sparked backlash from other TikTok users, many of whom condemned the students' actions. Critics also pointed to a second video in which one of the students allegedly responded to the controversy with what appeared to be a mock apology before repeating some of the offensive language.

After being notified of the incident, the Sisters School District issued a statement saying it is addressing the matter.

"The District takes all student issues, including matters involving racial content and student conduct, very seriously," the statement said. "Creating and maintaining a safe, respectful, and positive school culture remains a top priority for our schools and district."

District officials said the matter has been referred to school administration and is being addressed directly with the students involved and their families.

KTVZ News asked the district whether any disciplinary action had been taken. The district declined an interview request and did not provide additional details, citing the ongoing handling of the matter.

In its statement, the district reiterated its commitment to fostering an environment where all students feel safe, respected, and supported.

"The District remains committed to addressing concerns appropriately and fostering an environment where all students feel safe, respected, and supported," the statement concluded.
