BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) - When it comes to mapping out a major crime scene, time is of the essence for police, and the latest technology can make a crucial difference to help solve crimes and gather evidence.

Bend Police use a scanner called the Leica RTC360. The device was most recently used on an alleged attempted murder on Southwest Arrow Wood Drive. It's also used at criminal traffic crashes involving a fatality or major injuries.

The device provides Bend Police with a digital 3D copy of a scene, so they can preserve its dimensions and exactly how it looks at the time.

Oregon State Police and the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office also use this type of 3D laser scanner.

Kelsey McGee is speaking with Bend Police Communications Manager Sheila Miller and Community Service Officer Canyon Davis, who operates the device. Her report will be Tuesday evening on NewsChannel 21 at Five.
