Record heat expected over the holiday weekend

The area will be experiencing a significant warm up as we move through the long holiday weekend. Temperatures will be on the rise this week, reaching the low 100s by Friday. This period of heat will continue into next week. Our first "Heat Wave" of the year is about to begin.

Wednesday will be warm with highs in the middle 80s as the area will begin to become impacted by a large dome of high pressure. The ridge's outer edge is the start of the oppressive heat wave that will begin Thursday.

The Fourth of July will be our first hot day, defined by temperatures in the low 90s. Dry air and light winds will accompany the hot day and help warm us too. Prepare for what is about to be a long stretch of triple digit heat that will cause numerous issues.

Friday begins at least three days with temperature readings in the low 100s. The large ridge of high pressure over the west coast is expected to meander over Northern California this weekend. Record high temperatures are likely to fall in many locations.

The heat will continue well into next week as there is little relief in sight from the 90-degree heat until at least next Friday or Saturday.

Saturday and Sunday will be the most likely days to break afternoon high temperature records. Highs in Bend and Redmond Saturday will be around 104 - 105 and Sunday will see the mercury in the thermometer top out at 102 - 103.

Health will be impacted by the hot weather along with the increased fire danger. Drink plenty of water, take frequent breaks if you must be outside and stay in the shade. Check in on your neighbors and tend to your outside pets as often as you can.

Be aware that there will be tinder dry conditions by the end of the week, so be wildfire aware.
