The heat and dry weather continue, isolated storms into the evening
The heat has been with us since the 4th of July when the mercury in the thermometer crossed the 90° mark in Bend. The city has seen afternoon highs in the 90s and 100s since, and there is no let up in sight to the heat.
This month we have hit 100 five times, which is the most occurrences of triple digit heat for a whole year, let alone just one month. In 2022 there were five 100 degree days, the entire summer.
We are also on pace for the hottest July of all time by a shattering 4.5°. That may not sound like a big number, but it is a huge number in the record keeping world for that category. We are currently at 95.6° for an average high temperature to this point, the record is 91.2°. I am confident that the record for high temperature average will be broken this July.
There is a chance for some rain and thunderstorms today, so we may be dealing with some erratic winds near the storms. This is never a good thing when we are this dry and hot. Isolated storms may pop up, but not provide any relief from the heat, and may be more harmful with the wind generated by the storms.
The 90° heat will continue into the middle of next week, and there is a chance we get back to the century mark over the weekend. Please be careful and stay hydrated.
Since we are on pace for one of the hottest July's of all time in Bend, couple that with the lack of rain this season, I am concerned about the rest of the summer with respect to wildfires. Use an abundance of caution when camping or recreating in the region. We don’t need anymore wildfires to ignite, because if they do, there is a strong chance they will grow rapidly.
