Showers and storms overnight, off and on into the weekend

An area of low pressure will provide the region with the chance for some light to moderate rain overnight into Thursday morning. The rain will be accompanied by lightning, so the threat of a new wildfire is back on the table.  The fire danger is still very high since we have had very little rain, and no widespread rain, for several weeks.  Dry fuels on the ground will be ready to burn if lightning strikes.  There may be a bit more rain with the storms than previous events, but we still must be concerned about the chance for dry starts.

The rain will be off and on Thursday as the low pushes through the Pacific Northwest and clears the region Friday. The chance for rain ends Thursday from this low, but another is poised and ready to arrive Saturday.

The second low is more of a “meandering” low, meaning it will wobble off the coast for a few days. The result for Central Oregon will be some showers on Saturday, mainly over the mountains, and a breezy pattern into Sunday from the southwest. Overall, the rain will be more likely Saturday than Sunday, but with the meandering factor in place, timing will be tricky.

The smoky pattern will not be eliminated by the rainy pattern, but it will be suppressed a bit. Look for the “scouring showers” Thursday to help a bit and then more on the mountains Saturday.  The cluster of fires just to the west and south of La Pine, will hopefully get a good dose of moisture. That may allow more smoke for a short period, but should be beneficial in the long run.

Temperatures look to be on the mild side as highs over the next several days will be in the upper 70s to low 80s.
