Drying out and warming up moving forward this week

The region has been dealing with two areas of low pressure that are generating a decent amount of rain east of the area, and west of the area. Central Oregon is in the middle and will not get much in the way of rain today. There will be scattered showers, but the movement of both lows has been such, that the 97 corridor will not be impacted much.

The cooler temperatures of the past few days will be behind us as a slightly warmer pattern enters the area.  The mercury in the thermometer will be reading in the 70s the rest of the week and may breach the 80s next week. The rain did not materialize as anticipated, and the forecast looks dry for the next several days.  Much needed rain is not in the immediate future, and the mid-September temperatures of the middle 70s will dominate the forecast.

Apart from us needing the rain, the rest of the week and into the weekend will be a great time to enjoy what Central Oregon has to offer.  Take a hike, ride a bike, paddle the river or lake, kayak just walk around the block. This is looking like a very nice week and weekend for outdoor activities.

On a lunar note:  tonight will be a Supermoon, meaning the moon will be closest to the earth…and full… at the same time. It will appear larger and will be brighter. What is a Supermoon?  Well, the orbit of the moon is elliptical, not perfectly round, so there are periods of time when the moon is closer to earth and times when it is farther away. Perigee is when the moon is closest to earth, apogee is when the moon is farthest from earth. Tonight, the moon will be at perigee, and closest to the earth.  Unfortunately, the cloud cover may inhibit our ability to see the “harvest moon” at peak illumination times. But there may be some breaks in the cloud cover allowing us to enjoy the celestial beauty of the event. By the way, the Harvest Moon is the full moon closest to the autumnal equinox and the fall harvest.

Also, there will be a partial eclipse as well; the moon will be full, and passing through the shadow of the earth.  Only the top 8% of the moon will be dark around 7:44 pm, but again, it will more than likely be cloudy in Central Oregon and inhibit our view of the eclipse.  There will be reddish hue to the moon for during the eclipse, this is referred to as a Bloodmoon.  There is a lot going on tonight… Harvest Moon, Supermoon, Bloodmoon and partial eclipse. Enjoy if we can.
