Cold start this week, snow returns late New Year’s Eve and lingers into New Year’s Day
The region is drying out slightly with some cold air in place today and tonight. Patchy fog is possible tonight, meaning the fog should develop into "freezing fog" in the bitter cold air. Lows overnight will drop into the teens and single digits while the afternoon highs will only reach the upper 30s. Variably cloudy skies will define the next 24 hours before we return to the off and on wet pattern that we dealt with last week.
The last day of 2024 will be a mixture of clouds and sunshine to start, then become mostly cloudy late in the day. The chance for some light snow is likely to arrive on New Year’s Eve, so if you are planning to drive to celebrate the New Year, be prepared for some light snow.
The snow will begin before midnight and will usher in the New Year. The amount of snow will be light, but mountain passes will be slick and difficult to navigate. Expect to see the snow last until the first part of New Year’s Day then taper off by noon.
The next several days will be wet and rainy as, once again, a series of light rain and snow events push through. The overall pattern will not be nearly as wet as last week, but the possibility of some light rain each day and a wintry mix each night is back.
Temperatures from the first of the year to the first weekend of the year will be in the low to middle 40s. Overnight temperature readings will be near freezing. The lack of a bitter cold night will allow for the mix of rain and snow each night and the concern for patchy ice.
On the other side of the coin, the mountain resorts are enjoying the new and record snow. Each resort is excited to keep the natural snow machine going. Three local resorts, Bachelor, Timberline and Meadows are all over 100 inches as a base this week.
