Winter Weather Advisory in place tonight for parts of Central Oregon

New Year’s Eve will see a good chance for snow and that snow will linger into New Year’s Day.  The snow totals are expected to be 3 - 4” along the east face of the Cascades and through the mountain passes with higher amounts in pockets near the crest.

The Winter Weather Advisory is in place until 4 pm New Year's Day with the chance for a few inches of snow south of Lava Butte and including Sunriver, La Pine and west to Sisters.

Central Oregon will more than likely only see an inch or so from Lava Butte north along 97, but southern and western Deschutes and western Jefferson Counties may see 2 – 4” by mid-day Wednesday.

This will not be a major event but since it is New Year’s Eve the NWS has decided to be diligent and issue the advisory.  Slick roads and much more volume cars on the road late tonight have added to the concern. Please be aware that tonight there will be slick roads and reduced visibility.  Never drink and drive.

The forecast is calling for another wet period as showers will traverse the area off and on through at least Saturday. New Year’s Day starts out with the snow mentioned above, but should transition to rain after mid-morning expect in the advisory area.

A brief break is expected into the night Wednesday then Thursday will see the return of rain. The cold rain will be widespread and light.  There will be snow on the Cascades, but a heavy and wet snow.  Spotty rain is expected Friday and we don’t drop below freezing overnight north of Sunriver so only patchy ice is in the forecast.

Saturday should be the last in the line of showers as a mix of rain and snow is likely to invade the area once again.  Not much volume to the event, but the roads will still be slick and unsafe.

Sunday is currently looking like the first day of what will be several days of dry and chilly conditions.

Please stay safe.
